Report on the Webra Speed 36GT-H Engine by Bob Johnston
The model was fitted with the older Webra 35 competition engine so it was nice to have the opportunity to do a direct comparison between these two engines, the 35 comp has always been a good option for any one looking for a powerful but sweet running 30 sized engine. The 36 looks basically the same as the 35 but uses a true ABC piston and liner set up as opposed to the 35's ringed set up.
In use the engine certainly has noticeable more power than the 35 but still runs sweetly, the only thing to note is it seems it produces max power and runs the nicest when it is right on the point of been lean, while this is not a problem as such it does mean there is very little margin between the correct mixture and too lean.
I suspect most guys that are considering this engine would be weighing it up against the Irvine 39, the short answer is the Irvine has more power but the "problem" with the Irvine is that it actually has too much power for the average 30 sized rotor, when I used the Irvine in a Sceadu 30 complete with Hatori 350 tuned pipe I ended up having to go to longer (58cm) blades to keep the head speed under control, 55cm blades were just not enough. This is fine on the Sceadu but it's not so easy to just put longer blades on most 30 machines so the Irvine is almost overkill.
The Webra certainly seems a nice choice for the Raptor 30, I am about maxed out for pitch range but have enough for any 3D flying so any more power would not really be usable with the stock Raptor set up.
The 36 I tried is very tight from new and is still fairly tight after a reasonable amount of running, this maybe particular to this one engine only or it might be the same on them all, certainly a ABC engine has to be tight when cold to work well but this is the tightest 30 sized engine I have come across, I don't think this is necessarily a good or bad thing but it might well mean the engine is a little more susceptible to damage when running in if this is not done correctly so maybe not a engine for the novice.
Other than that overall I am very impressed and happy with the engine and it would be my current number one choice for most 30 sized models.
